Please note: Chloe has recently purchased an entirely new studio setup. The examples below have not yet been re-worked to take advantage of the new higher quality and more realistic samples - consequently the instruments within the examples below may sound synthetic or of low quality.

Commissions

One of Chloe's earliest commissions came when she was asked to arrange and harmonize a co-written theme tune designed as a youtube spoof video, for the self-confessed deeply bitter youtube personality; 'Church of Blow'. Although the brief was merely 'I want something akin to the Muppets, and child like that fits these lyrics', the video then went onto become 'Featured' by youtube, earning close to 2 million hits/viewings, a surprising number of tribute spoofs using the same music, and mp3 downloads; a basic midi sound project that continues to produce unexpected royalties.

This unexpected success snowballed into many other different types of compositional work, as more film makers, youtubers, and game creators sought commissions.

'Xiao Mei' - Samuel Boxall

This short film commission went on to be premiered at 'The Hastings Film Festival', winning first place in 2008.:
'Xiao Mei' was a short film exploring an emotional journey of the central lead, a young chinese girl, and also the fusing of traditional China with modern westernized ideals. It was set in China's more run down streets and beautiful untouched countryside, with haunting imagery throughout. All dialogue was Chinese with English subtitles.

"Xiao Mei was a challenge as the Director had a specific idea of what he wanted in mind, so it was interesting for me to work to his guidelines, while hopefully providing him with something new and stimulating. Originally he wanted only long sustained individual notes, but I presented him with options, working to his wishes by making the harmony as basic as possible. He was pleased with the results. I had a deadline of only a few days in which to complete and edit the project, so it was exciting to work under those conditions."

'Xiao Mei' - 'Theme' (2:55)

'Xiao Mei' - 'Theme'
"I set out to fuse basic western harmony and stoic rhythms to comply with the Director's wishes and create a sparse simple soundscape, while mixing this with more oriental melodic intervals. The ostinato (repeating note) was designed as not only a heartbeat for the piece, but to imply that the girl character is at her core, constant. It also was an aspect based on traditional Chinese music, which usually refer to a reference note throughout the playing of a melody. The entire piece was put through a variety of filters to create an unfocused, shifting and sometimes muffled uneasy texture."

'Xiao Mei' - 'Dreams' (1:14)

'Xiao Mei' - 'Dream'
"I wrote an atonal dissonant sequence for a dream section within the film. The opening of this was intended to be a selection of almost random tones, signifying the water shown onscreen, but also paying homage to the chinese oriental improvisations played on traditional stringed instruments which often leap octaves. This uncomfortable environment then eventually develops back into the now recognisable main theme."
